Male breast reduction, also knows as correction of gynecomastia, corrects male breast enlargement.
Male breast enlargement can be an unsightly, embarassing, or even painful condition. Male breast reduction can help correct man boobs so you can feel more comfortable with your appearance and body.
Male breast enlargement, also called gynecomastia, is a common condition that often appears during the teenage years and can last into adulthood. For some, the degree of enlargement can be mild. For others, it can be pronounced enough to cause you to feel self conscious about your appearance with or without your shirt. For the most unfortunate, it can leave you with sagging skin and droopy nipples.
Having man boobs is linked to obesity, certain medical conditions such as hormonal disorders, and use of some medications including marijuana, so keeping your weight under control and getting a general health checkup are important first steps. For most patients, however, the cause is unknown, and losing weight helps but doesn’t make the condition go away. Additionally, no amount of exercise will make the problem go away.
Male breast reduction surgery can help you get rid of your man boobs.

How Male Breast Reduction Surgery is Performed
Male breast reduction surgery can relieve discomfort, improve your lifestyle, and enhance the appearance of your chest.
Male breast reduction surgery is typically an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia, twilight sleep, or in select circumstances, local anesthesia.
3 Procedure Options Depending on the Degree of Enlargement and Sagging
There are 3 main options for male breast reduction surgery depending primarily on the degree of breast enlargement and sagging:
For patients with minimal to mild sagging, liposuction alone (or “virtually scar free”) can be an excellent treatment. Through one or two tiny incisions, excess tissue is removed using special liposuction cannulas.
Liposuction alone male breast reduction has two main shortcomings. First, it can only remove fat in the breast and cannot remove firm glandular tissue. Every man has some fat in the enlarged chest, but surgeons cannot determine before surgery how much of the enlarged breast is due to fat or to glandular tissue. So there is a possibility that the male breast reduction will not remove as much tissue as would be ideal or desired. However, most patients undergoing liposuction of the chest who are proper candidates are able to obtain a chest that if flatter and firmer.
Second, liposuction alone male breast reduction does not lift the chest. With less weight, the chest skin typically retracts upwards but the extent to which this occurs is not predictable. Liposuction alone male breast reduction is best suited for men who do not need or do not desire a chest lift.
For patients with moderate sagging, liposuction plus breast tissue excision can be a good treatment. In addition to the removal of fat using liposuction, excess breast tissue is excised directly through an incision around the areola.
For patients with severe sagging, a chest lift including the removal of excess drooping skin and upwards relocation of the nipple is needed. The excess skin and tissue may be excised in a variety of patterns, resulting in different scar patterns. The nipple is kept attached to the underlying chest tissue whenever possible, which preserves color and sensibility, but in some instances a free nipple graft may be necessary.
A male chest lift involves a tradeoff between removing the excess tissue and skin in exchange for lengthy scars. For many, the tradeoff is well worthwhile.
What to Expect After Male Breast Reduction
You will be able to go home shortly after surgery to continue your recovery. Your chest will be bandaged or placed in a compression garment.
Most patients experience some soreness, swelling, and bruising after male breast reduction surgery. Dr Fan will prescribe pain medication to help keep you comfortable, and many patients find they can switch to over the counter pain relievers after the first few days. Bruising typically resolves over 1-3 weeks, while mild residual swelling may last longer.
While you’ll be able to get up and walk around the house the same day of surgery, you should expect to take it easy for the first few days. Also, expect to sleep on your back at an incline for the first several weeks after surgery.
Many patients return to work within the first week after male breast reduction surgery, depending on the nature of their jobs, and resume most daily activities after a week or so. You will need to limit exercise other than walking for the first 2-6 weeks after malebreast reduction; Dr.Fan will provide you with detailed instructions about when it is safe to resume any activity.
Residual soreness, swelling, and altered sensations should gradually subside over the first 3-6 months. Your new chest and any gathering of tissue will “settle down” over 3-6 months. Scars will initially be pink and slightly raised, but they will fade and flatten out in the months that follow surgery, up to two years.
A highly experienced surgeon is important for obtaining natural, noticeable results. It is important to choose your surgeon based on their education, training, and experience with your specific procedure as well as your comfort level with them.
The cost of male breast reduction depends on the type of reduction needed to achieve your desired result. We will help you create a customized plan, in person, that is tailored to your specific needs. The cost for male breast reduction ranges from $8,000-$25,000.
We offer a range of patient financing plans including low monthly payment plans and plans for those with suboptimal credit histories.
Health insurance companies may cover portions of the cost of male breast reduction surgery but they have specific criteria you must meet. However, health insurance companies often do not provide sufficient reimbursement to the doctor, so fewer experienced plastic surgeons are accepting insurance.
Male breast enlargement is linked to obesity, so losing weight can help. For most, losing weight helps some, but does not make the condition go away. Exercise can help provide a firmer foundation for the chest, but it will not make gynecomastia go away.
Male breast reduction usually takes 1 to 5 hours to perform.
General anesthesia or local with intravenous sedation.
Male breast reduction is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. In select circumstances, an overnight hospital stay may be recommended or even required.
Temporary bruising, swelling, discomfort, numbness, dry breast skin, and “bunched” or “pleated” tissues are common. Some degree of scarring is to be expected.
Male breast reduction is an extremely popular and generally very satisfying procedure. Male breast reduction is typically considered safe, however, all surgical procedures carry inherent risks. The risks of breast reduction including bleeding, infection, scarring, adverse reaction to anesthesia, delayed healing, tissue loss, asymmetry, contour deformity, recurrence, and permanent loss of feeling in the nipples or chest.
Back to work: 1 week or more. Strenuous activities: 1 month. Fading of scars: several months to a year.
