Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that aims to reduce the size and weight of large, heavy breasts. There are different types of breast reductions, each with its own specific technique. The following are the procedure steps for the different types of breast reductions:

Anchor, Inverted-T, or Wise Pattern Breast Reduction

This method has long been considered the gold standard for breast reduction surgery. It involves making an incision around the areola, straight down the center of the lower half of the breast, and horizontally along the crease of the breast, creating an anchor or inverted-T shape. This method allows for the greatest control over breast shape and proportion as excess breast tissue can be removed from any part of the breast. Although it does produce longer scars, many patients are satisfied with the results as it alleviates physical discomfort and creates firmer, more shapely breasts.

Vertical or “Lollipop” Breast Reduction

The vertical or lollipop breast reduction is a great option for certain breasts. It produces shorter scars and can improve long-term breast shape and projection. This technique involves some skin bunching along the lower half of the breast, which usually flattens over time. In some cases, a short horizontal scar may be needed at the bottom, or scar revision may be necessary. This technique works best for women with mild to moderately enlarged breasts and may not be as suitable for women with extremely large breasts.

Anchor Breast Reduction

Anchor breast reduction differs from vertical breast reduction in that it incorporates an extra horizontal scar along the breast crease. This incision, which is typically inconspicuous to patients, provides greater control over breast shape by allowing for removal of skin in an additional direction. Therefore, the anchor breast reduction technique is considered the most versatile option for breast reduction.

“Donut” or “Benelli” Breast Reduction

This technique has a scar that goes around the perimeter of the areola only. It is suitable for small and light breasts, but not for larger breasts. For larger breasts, this technique can result in stretched and flattened areolas, widened scars, and an unattractive, flat shape.

“No Vertical Scar” Breast Reduction

The No Vertical Scar breast reduction procedure has two scars: one around the edge of the areola and a second one along the crease of the breast. The main advantage of this procedure is that it eliminates the vertical scar used in anchor and vertical breast reduction. However, there are some disadvantages to consider. This technique limits the removal of skin in the horizontal axis, which affects the ability to reshape the breasts and can result in a wider breast shape. Additionally, this procedure is only suitable for women with severe drooping. It may not be the right option for those who desire optimal breast shape. Nonetheless, for women with severe drooping who are willing to compromise on breast shape, the No Vertical Scar breast reduction can be a viable choice.

Virtually Scarless Breast Reduction

Liposuction only breast reduction is a suitable option for women with less droopiness and a minimal amount of weight to be removed. This procedure results in smaller and lighter breasts with only one or two tiny scars concealed in the crease under the breasts. Additionally, the recovery time is shorter compared to standard breast reduction.

However, liposuction for breast reduction has limitations. It can only eliminate fat and not glandular tissue. Surgeons cannot determine beforehand the proportion of fat and glandular tissue in the breasts. This means that the results may not meet the ideal or desired outcome. However, most suitable candidates for liposuction breast reduction can experience relief from physical symptoms and achieve breasts that are more in proportion with their body.

Additionally, liposuction only breast reduction does not lift the breasts. The retraction of breast skin due to weight loss is unpredictable. This procedure is most suitable for women who do not require or desire a breast lift.

Recovery

Recovery from breast reduction surgery is an important aspect that patients should be prepared for. After the procedure, patients can expect to go home with bandages or a surgical bra to support the healing breasts. It is normal to experience soreness, swelling, and bruising in the days following surgery, but pain medication can be prescribed to manage discomfort.

Bruising typically subsides within 1 to 3 weeks, while mild swelling may last longer. It is important for patients to take it easy during the first few days after surgery and sleep on their back at an incline for several weeks to help reduce swelling. Most daily activities can be resumed within a week, and patients can return to work depending on the physical demands of their job.

Exercise, other than walking, should be limited for 2 to 6 weeks, with specific instructions provided by Dr. Fan. While soreness, swelling, and altered sensations are common during the initial recovery period, they gradually subside over 3 to 6 months. It is important for patients to be patient and allow time for their new breasts and tissue to settle.

Scars from breast reduction surgery will fade and flatten over time, typically taking up to two years. Dr. Fan and his team will provide detailed post-operative care instructions to ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results. It is crucial for patients to follow these instructions closely to promote healing and minimize any potential complications.

It is important to note that recovery time can vary among individuals, and it is essential to listen to your body and give it the rest it needs during the recovery period. Dr. Fan will provide personalized guidance and support throughout your recovery.

2. What are the steps involved in breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery typically involves removing excess breast tissue, tightening the skin envelope, and lifting the nipples. The specific technique used will depend on your symptoms, goals, and anatomy, and will be determined during a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon.

3. How long does the recovery process take after breast reduction surgery?

The initial recovery period after breast reduction surgery is typically around 1 week, during which you may experience soreness, swelling, and bruising. Most patients can return to work and light activities within this timeframe, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for about 4 weeks.
