Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is BOTOX® and how does it work?
BOTOX® is a popular treatment used to smooth fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles. It is injected into specific areas of the face, where it temporarily blocks nerve signals that cause muscle contractions, resulting in a more relaxed and youthful appearance.
2. Who is a candidate for BOTOX® treatment?
Candidates for BOTOX® are individuals who are bothered by facial wrinkles and desire a younger or more relaxed appearance. BOTOX® can be used to treat glabellar lines (between the eyebrows), wrinkles around the eyes (crow's feet), forehead lines, and other conditions such as neck banding or excessive sweating.
3. Does BOTOX® injection hurt?
Most patients describe BOTOX® injections as painless or a quick pinch. To enhance comfort, a numbing ice may be applied to the treated areas prior to the injections. Any discomfort experienced during the procedure is usually minimal and temporary.
4. How long does BOTOX® last and when can I expect to see results?
The effects of BOTOX® typically last for about 3 to 4 months. It may take up to one to two weeks for the full results to become visible, as the muscles gradually relax. However, some patients may start to see improvements within a few days.
5. Are there any limitations or precautions after BOTOX® treatment?
After BOTOX® treatment, it is recommended to avoid touching the treated area for at least 4 hours and refrain from engaging in strenuous activities. Additionally, it is advisable to avoid lying down or engaging in yoga immediately after the treatment to prevent medication movement. While routine washing and showering are safe, activities that cause flushing or inflammation in the face, such as facial treatments, saunas, exercising, and tanning, should be avoided. Dr. Fan will provide you with specific instructions to follow after your BOTOX treatment.
6. What are the risks and side effects of BOTOX® injections?
Risks and side effects associated with BOTOX® injections are rare but can include reduced activity in adjacent muscles, which may result in temporary eyelid drooping. Temporary swelling, redness, and mild bruising may also occur at the injection sites, but these typically subside within a short period of time. It is important to choose an experienced injector to minimize the risk of complications and achieve natural, noticeable results.
